Picking the Best School District For Your Family

Andrea Garcia Professional Realtor

It's back-to-school time, and if you’re moving with kids, chances are you’re looking for a home in a good school district. According to a 2019 survey from the National Association of Realtors, more than half of homebuyers with school-aged children believe the quality of the school district is an important factor when purchasing a home.

But how do you find a school district that will suit your needs?

To start, you’ll need to think about what you want from a school district. Then, after doing some research online and getting guidance from your real estate agent, you’ll be able to decide which school districts could be a good fit.

Create a List of What’s Important to You

Before you can determine if a school district is “good”, you have to decide what qualities are important to you. Consider these questions to help you:

  • What style of learning do you prefer: traditional or alternative?

  • Do you want a school with a particular focus such as academics, sports, or arts?

  • How important are extracurricular or other activities? If they are important to you, is there a specific sport, art, or academic program you need?

  • What are your child’s strengths and weaknesses? What do they need out of a school?

Think about the school calendar too. If you have a kindergartener, do you want or need full-day or half-day classes? Do the school hours or which days they attend school matter? Different districts will do these things differently. For instance, Chandler Unified School District offers year-round schooling, while Mesa Public Schools has a half day every week.

Do Your Research

Once you know what you want in a school district, you can start searching for districts that meet your criteria. Check out the websites of schools and districts in the areas you’re interested in moving to. You can find a ton of information there. Other websites like GreatSchools.org, NeighborhoodScout.com, and the National Center for Education Statistics can also offer useful information. Read local reviews about the schools for more personal insights.

While you’re doing your research, some things you should look at are:

  • How long teachers have been there

  • How long the principal has been there

  • Student-to-teacher ratio

  • Teacher turnover

  • Testing metrics

  • Awards and certifications the school has received

  • Specialized programs that suit your needs

  • Curriculum and languages offered
